Turkish coastguard patrols contested islets during Greek PM visit

Turkish navy and coastguard positioned near the contested Kardak / Imia islets in the Aegean Sea during the visit of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Defence Minister Panos Kammenos to the nearby island of Kalymnos.

Tsipras and Kammenos were visiting the island for religious ceremonies, Turkey's Doğan News Agency (DHA) reported.

The Turkish side was alerted because Kammenos was suspected to be thinking of making a surprise visit to the islets, DHA reported.

On Saturday morning, a Turkish coastguard boat was seen patrolling around the islets, while the Turkish navy positioned an assault boat and a frigate in the nearby Gümüşlük bay, DHA said.

Greek coastguard and rescue boats were also seen near the area, and both sides made warning announcements to each other, report said.

Fishermen were also kept away from the waters until noon, after when the military presence was reduced apart from one coastguard boat from each side.
