Turkey ready to contribute to an Afghanistan with ‘inclusive’ government

Ankara on Tuesday called for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan, which caters to the whole of Afghan society, Duvar news site reported.

Ankara's greatest desire is the establishment of such a government in the war-torn country, the site cited Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu as saying during a joint press conference with his Serbian counterpart Nikola Selakovic in Belgrade.

Çavuşoğlu said Turkey was ready to make contributions for the establishment of peace and tranquillity in Afghanistan while pointing to a possible new migration crisis following the Taliban takeover in the country.

Last month, Turkey offered to assume the responsibility of running and protecting Kabul’s strategic Hamid Karzai Airport following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troop  from the war-battered country.

But the security situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated rapidly amid a swift Taliban takeover, which also sparked a potential refugee crisis, leaving questions over Turkey’s involvement in the country.

"We have to see what kind of government will be formed in Afghanistan. There is a migration crisis in the world and a new migration crisis is possible,’’ Çavuşoğlu said. The Turkish official said he discussed with Selakovic the necessary steps to be taken to prevent “irregular migration waves and to provide aid so that people in Afghanistan can stay." 

The latest developments in Afghanistan have sparked concern in Ankara and the European Union of another 2015 refugee crisis, wherein nearly a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and beyond crossed to Greece from Turkey before travelling further into Europe.
