11.34 No civilian casualties in Turkey’s Syria operation – Turkish minister

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said there had been no civilian casualties at all so far in his country’s operation in the Afrin region of Syria.

Turkish troops and their Syrian rebel allies launched an offensive against the northwestern Syrian enclave of Afrin on Jan. 20 to drive Syrian Kurdish forces out of the region. Turkish warplanes have conducted a number of air strikes as artillery has pounded the area.

Turkey will tell U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson the two countries must repair damaged mutual trust, its foreign minister said on Tuesday, following a series of disagreements, especially over the Syria crisis.

"Our trust is damaged. We have to mend our trust. The contacts between us are important," Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu told broadcaster TGRT Haber in an interview.


08.42 Turkish FM denies disagreements with Russia

Turkey and Russia have no disagreements over Ankara's air and ground offensive into northern Syria's Afrin region and the two countries are in close contact over the operation, Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Tuesday.

The statement comes after speculation that Russian pressure had been behind a lull in Turkish air attacks inside Syria.


08.15 Iran calls for Afrin op to end

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called for the Turkish operation in Afrin to come to an end, Qatari news site Al Jazeera said.

"A military foreign intervention should be based on the authorisation of the host country and its people," it quoted Rouhani as saying.
