U.S. still smuggling arms to Syria's Kurds – Islamist daily
Turkish pro-government Islamist newspaper Yeni Şafak said Syrian rebels had captured a converted oil tanker filled with heavy weapons it says were being sent by the United States to Syrian Kurdish fighters in the enclave of Afrin, under siege by Turkish forces.
“Syrian opposition group Nour al-Din al-Zenki stopped a suspicious vehicle disguised as a fuel tanker, then began to search the vehicle. Once opening the container, it was found that the truck was “full to the brim” with heavy weapons,” the newspaper said.
“Among the seized weapons were TOW missiles, RPG-7 rocket launchers, infantry rifles, 7.62-millimetre machine guns and its ammunition, automatic weapons, a large amount of ammunition and anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons and systems,” it said.
The weapons also included four Konkurs anti-tank missiles, the Russian-made system that was used to destroy a Turkish tank on Saturday, killing five Turkish soldiers, the newspaper said.
