Daron Acemoğlu may take part in Babacan’s new party - report
Turkey’s former Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, who is about to launch a new political party, has said internationally renowned economist Daron Acemoğlu will take part in the new initiative, İslam Özkan, a journalist working for Duvar news site, said on Wednesday citing a meeting with the politician.
Babacan did not mention whether Acemoğlu would join the party as a member or as an adviser, Özkan said on Twitter.
Turkey-born Acemoğlu, who is among the 10 most cited economists in the world, is currently the Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. So far Acemoğlu has not confirmed nor denied these claims.
According to Özkan, Selçuk Şirin, an expert on political psychology, will also be on Babacan’s team.
Babacan, who resigned from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) this year, is going to establish a liberal party and has been trying to gather a highly qualified team of technocrats, the journalist said.
