Germany “discomfited” by Turkish tank engineering success - Turkish newspaper

Germany is worried by Turkey’s national tank programme, which aims to produce 20 tanks a year by 2020, according to Islamist newspaper Yeni Akit.

The newspaper quotes Armin Papperger, the CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, as saying that Turkey’s national Altay tank project was a small project he was not interested in investing in.

Plus, Papperger said, poor relations between Germany and Turkey had also hit German enthusiasm for investing in the country.

“Germany, which always seeks to obstruct Turkey’s megaprojects, has begun its smear campaign against the Altay tanks,” Yeni Akit said.

“The Germans, who gave patronising statements about the locally-produced car, have used similar expressions for the Altay tanks.”
