Turkish court rejects pastor Brunson’s appeal for freedom
A Turkish court rejected an appeal filed by pastor Andrew Brunson, an American missionary caught in the middle of a diplomatic row between Turkey and the United States, for his release from house arrest on Wednesday, BBC Turkish said.
The continued detention of Brunson, who was arrested in October 2016 and faces 35 years in prison over a variety of terror charges, has been cited as the reason for economic sanctions on Turkey by the United States.
Brunson’s lawyer, İsmail Cem Halavurt, told Ahval he had not expected a positive outcome from the court that had given the decision in the first place, but that the rejection allowed Brunson to appeal to another court.
He would continue to appeal against the decision, Halavurt added.
