Private sector could carry out archaeological digs in Turkey – Minister
Some archaeological sites could soon be taken over by the private sector under a “dig-and-operate” license, Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Numan Kurtulmuş was quoted by Milliyet as saying.
“In order to increase interest, maybe some places could be opened to public sector use under a ‘take this, do it, uncover it, operate it’-type model in an environment 100 percent under control,” Kurtulmuş said.
“What we can do in, say, 30 years, the private sector can do in three or four years.”
Göbekli Tepe, a temple from the 10th millennium BC based in Turkey’s southeast, is to open to the public in April, Kurtulmuş added.
