Kurdish singer from Germany arrested in Turkey

A German citizen of Kurdish origin was arrested in Turkey’s northwestern province of Edirne, where she had participated in the election campaign of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), independent news site Diken reported.

Fourty seven-year-old Hozan Cane had been taken into custody on June 23 because of her social media posts and stands accused of conducting terrorist propaganda.

Ankara accuses the HDP, which won 49 seats in seats in Turkish Parliament in Sunday’s elections, of harbouring sympathies and acting in the interests of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an armed Kurdish group that has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey for more than three decades.
