One sailor killed in pirate attack on Turkish ship off coast of Guinea

One crew member was killed and over a dozen others kidnapped when pirates attacked a Turkish cargo ship off the coast of Guinea on Saturday, Birgün newspaper reported.

Nigerian pirates attacked the M/V Mozart, operated by Istanbul-based Boden Maritime, while sailing 100 nautical miles off the island of Tome, kidnapping 15 out of the 19 sailors on board, it said.

The ship was travelling from Lagos to Cape Town.

Azeri engineer Farman Ismayilov has been identified as the crew member killed in the attack on the ship.

The West African coast has long been a target for pirates, with the Gulf of Guinea being described as the most dangerous area in the world for piracy by the International Maritime Bureau.
