Opposition mayor in western Turkey target of armed attack
A main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) district deputy mayor in Turkey’s western province of İzmir suffered an armed attack on Saturday, news site Diken reported.
Çiğli deputy mayor Ali Rıza Koçer was attacked by a group of unidentified people around 8 p.m. local time as he parked his vehicle in Ataşehir neighbourhood, it said.
Koçer was not injured in the attack, in which eyewitnesses reported the assailants firing six shots into the air.
İzmir police have started an investigation into the attack, Diken said.
