First runway ready at new Istanbul airport
The first runway at Istanbul’s new airport has been completed, Flight Global reported.
The runway’s lighting system has now been switched on, it said, citing development consortium IGA. The airport will be opened on Oct. 29.
Eighty percent of the initial development phase for the airport in the northeast of the city has been completed, Flight Global said.
"We have recently finished the baggage system, which constitutes our airport’s core," said IGA chief Yusuf Akcayoglu.
"Now we have made the [first runway] ready for landing with all the required equipment and in compliance with the relevant global standards."
The new hub will initially handle 90 million passengers annually and serve around 100 airlines. It will have three parallel runways, Flight Global said.
