Only Turkey working for peace in Syria – Turkish PM

Turkey’s prime minister Binali Yıldırım has welcomed U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria but said that only Turkey is truly working for peace in the country, Russia-controlled news outlet Sputnik said.

The airstrikes, reportedly aimed at chemical weapons production facilities, were carried out by the United States, Britain and France after President Bashar Assad allegedly used chemical weapons on his own people in the town of Douma.

“All of a sudden, the countries that see themselves as the consciences of the world have raised their voices,” Yıldırım said at a party congress in the Istanbul district of Esenler.

“For seven years, people have been murdered in Syria, the horrors have continued – does your humanity only come to your mind when chemical weapons are used? Where were you up until now?”

The airstrikes, he said, were a positive step, but “there is a need for more than that for a lasting peace”.

Indeed, he did not necessarily yet consider the Western triad to be working towards peace.

“There is only one country working towards peace in Syria, and that is Turkey. That country is (President) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,” he said.
