Turkish court seeks arrest of veteran journalist Cengiz Çandar
Turkey has issued an arrest warrant for veteran opposition journalist Cengiz Çandar on charges of "praising crime and the criminal," Birgün newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The warrant issued by the court for the journalist stems from his remarks on social media in 2017 expressing his regret over the death of a female fighter of Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).
Turkey sees the YPG as an affiliate of the with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an armed group that has been at war in Turkey for almost four decades.
The woman in question, Ayşe Deniz Karacagil, was detained during 2013 Gezi protests. Karacagil's red scarf was linked with socialism and became infamous during the protests.
Çandar currently resides in Sweden.
The second hearing in the case will held on April 15, Birgün said.
