Photographer refuses to shoot child bride, breaks groom’s nose
A photographer who refused to work at a wedding upon discovering the bride was only 15-years-old, broke the groom’s nose following a heated debate in Turkey’s eastern province of Malatya, secular Cumhuriyet daily reported.
Onur Albayrak, who works as a wedding photographer in Malatya had a haunting suspicion a bride he was photographing last week was very young; when he discovered she was only 15, he put his camera down.
‘’I can’t take pictures of a child bride,’’ Albayrak said in protest, which sent the groom into a state of fury over what he said was the ‘’violation their work contract.’’
The two became involved a heated argument which turned physical. Albayrak broke the groom’s nose, Cumhuriyet said.
Albayrak took to Facebook after the incident went viral:
‘’I wish this had never happened, but it did. And if you were to ask me if I’d do the same thing again, I’d say ‘yes.’ Child brides are [victims] of child abuse and no power on earth can make me photograph a child in a wedding gown.’’
The legal age for marriage in Turkey is 18; however, the country has one of the highest rates of child marriage in Europe with an estimated 15 percent of girls married before the age of 18 with parental consent.
