Kaftancıoğlu announces renomination for opposition CHP’s Istanbul chief
The Istanbul chair of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Canan Kaftancıoğlu announced on Tuesday that she would be running for the same position in the party’s upcoming Istanbul provincial congress on Sunday.
The congress, set to take place on February 9 at the Istanbul Haliç Congress Centre, is expected to see the election of the CHP Istanbul chair, a position held by Kafancıoğlu since 2018. The 48-year-old is the first woman elected to the post.
"I want to thank my husband and daughter for their sacrifices over the past two years in helping me realise my dream, which we will establish together,’’ Artı Gerçek news site quoted Kaftancıoğlu as saying on Tuesday.
"I am announcing my candidacy with the same sentiment and belief,’’ Kaftancıoğlu said.
The CHP’s Istanbul chair is one of the strongest opposition voices within the party and is widely credited for successfully steering the party’s municipal elections in Istanbul, which saw the CHP take over the city’s mayoralty following 25 years of Islamist rule by Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its predecessors.
