Secularist CHP official says photoshopped image in headscarf degrades all women
Turkey’s main opposition secularist Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu has dismissed a photoshopped image of her donning an Islamic headscarf, which has gone viral, as an attempt to degrade women over their attire.
Kaftancıoğlu shared the image, an apparent jab at the secularist CHP official, on Twitter, stating, “You don’t have a right to degrade any woman for the sake of political gains. You must respect every shape and colour which women have decided [to take on] through their own free will.’’
The CHP official also noted that those who think they are degrading her by depicting her with a headscarf are insulting her, are actually insulting headscarved woman.
“It looks good,’’ Kaftancıoğlu added.
The CHP has traditionally been staunchly opposed to the headscarf, however, has in recent years adopted a more inclusive policy in embracing Turkey’s conservative and pious population.
