Turkish opposition party urges CNN to investigate Turkish branch for false news

Turkey's main opposition party on Tuesday urged CNN television to open an investigation against its Turkish branch for censoring its reports and broadcasting false news about the party's election campaign.

Yurter Özcan, U.S. official for the Republican People's Party (CHP), said CNN’s outlet in Turkey, CNN Türk, intentionally ignored some important news, broadcast false news against his party and made propaganda in favour of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

"CNN Türk, especially in the last months while we are approaching the March 31 local elections, has had a habit of skipping important news and causing disinformation by making false news," Özcan said in a letter to CNN headquarters in Atlanta.

Özcan wrote that CNN Türk distorted at least one politician's speech and also said that if CHP mayoral candidates win in Istanbul and Ankara, the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) would run the municipalities.

HDP has not nominated candidates in Turkey’s big cities as a part of their election strategy to increase the chances for the opposition against the AKP and its nationalist partner.

"This false news aims to support ultra-nationalist discourse of the AKP government. This is not the first false news that CNN Türk broadcasted to speak and make propaganda on behalf of the AKP government and disparage the opposition," wrote Özcan.

"I request you to start an investigation against CNN Türk," he said.
