Jailed journalists in high spirits ahead of trial
Three Turkish journalists are looking forward to their hearing on Friday, after over a year in jailing pending trial, the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet reports.
Ahmet Şık, Akın Atalay and Murat Sabuncu, three jailed journalists from Cumhuriyet newspaper, have been held for over 400 days for allegedly supporting the organisers of the 2016 coup attempt.
However, the journalists and their supporters say the government has used the ongoing state of emergency since the coup attempt to target them as critical journalists.
Turkish Journalists’ Association chief Turgay Olcayto visited the three journalists ahead of their trial on Mar. 9, and said they were in “high spirits”, particularly given that they had already served the length of their requested sentence while awaiting trial.
