North Korean hacker group targeted Turkey’s financial sector - McAfee

A North Korean hacker group attempted to use malware to target Turkey’s financial sector, pro-government newspaper Daily Sabah said.

The group, which goes by the names Hidden Cobra and the Lazarus Group, attacked "a major government-controlled financial organisation, a government body involved in finance and trade, and three other large financial institutions in Turkey" in early March with a form of malware known as Bankshot.

"Bankshot is designed to persist on a victim's network for further exploitation; thus the Advanced Threat Research team believes this operation is intended to gain access to specific financial organisations," Daily Sabah quoted the report as saying.

The Lazarus Group has previously been implicated in attempts at stealing crypto-currency, possibly in order to help a North Korean economy that has been badly damaged by sanctions.
