Istanbul police detain leftist Turkish author without charge
Istanbul police on Monday raided the home of Ayşegül Tezören, an author and columnist for leftist daily Evrensel, and took her into custody, Evrensel reported.
The police revealed no reason for her detention, but told Tezören’s family the author was detained in response to a tip-off.
“There are lots of police at home. They are detaining Ayşegül. They are not saying why,” Evrensel quoted Tezören’s mother as saying to the newspaper’s editor-in-chief on the phone.
Tezören, who was taken to police headquarters in Istanbul, was not allowed to see her lawyers on the grounds that there were restrictions over the investigation for 24 hours.
