Turkey detains 16 over Reyanlı car bombing

Turkish police detained 16 suspects in connection to a car bombing on Friday in the Reyhanlı district of southern Hatay province, which claimed the lives of three people, state-run Anadolu News Agency reported on Sunday.

Three Syrian nationals lost their lives on Friday when a car carrying a bomb exploded in the town centre of Reyhanlı, which borders Syria.

Two Syrian nationals inside the car were killed immediately and one other person died in the hospital as a result of injuries.

The detentions follow a police investigation and subsequent raid on the towns of Reyhanlı and İskenderun, Andolu said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan following the blast said that initial findings by the interior minister pointed to the incident possibly being terror related.

Reyhanlı was hit by bombings in 2013 which killed 51 people and left 140 wounded.
