Turkey detains self-identified human smuggler

Turkish police detained on Sunday a man who identified himself as a human smuggler in the northwestern province of Edirne, Birgün newspaper reported.

The detention Özcan K. follows a video of him sharing details of his work as a human smuggler going viral.

Özcan K. said he has been smuggling people into Europe for years and served jail time for his line of work.

The man said he arrived to help refugees cross the border after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced earlier this week that Turkey won’t prevent migrants from crossing its border with the European Union until it has received more support for the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in neighbouring Syria.

The move arrives as Turkey suffers mounting troop losses in Syria.

Some 13,000 migrants have gathered along the Turkish-Greek border after Erdoğan threatened to allow some of the 3.6 million refugees in the country cross into Europe, the United Nations said.
