Turkish police detain nine over destroyed buildings in İzmir earthquake
Turkish police on Monday detained nine people in connection to buildings destroyed in the deadly earthquake in the country’s western İzmir province that has claimed over 90 lives, T24 news site reported.
The detainees include contractors and engineering authorities, it said, and officials are seeking to detain two more following an investigation.
At least 20 buildings in the city of Izmiralone were destroyed on Friday when a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Aegean Sea.
The overall death toll reached 91 on Monday after teams discovered more bodies overnight and Monday morning amid the debris in Turkey’s third-largest city. Almost 1,000 people were injured in the quake.
Search and rescue efforts in İzmir have entered day four on Monday, when teams rescued two girls, including a three-year-old, alive from the wreckage of their collapsed apartment buildings.
