Turkish-origin youths reconnect to their parents’ culture

The children of Turks in the diaspora are being kept in touch with their heritage through a government-sponsored scheme to bring them on tours of Turkey, state news agency Anadolu said.

The Evliya Celebi Youth Bridges Project gave ninety young people brought up abroad seminars and tours of sites in Istanbul, Bursa, Canakkale and Edirne provinces between Dec. 28 and Jan. 3, the agency said.

The aim of the project, which began in 2014, was to “familiarise Turkish youths with Turkey's national, spiritual and cultural values through visits to historical and cultural sites in various cities”, it added.

Similar attempts to reconnect with diaspora populations have been carried out by neighbouring states such as Greece, Armenia and Israel.
