Turkish court rules wedding gold belongs to brides

The gold traditionally presented to a couple on their wedding by friends and family is the personal property of the bride, a Turkish court has ruled.

The case of a divorced couple in which the gold had gone to pay off the groom’s pre-marital debts led to a ruling by the Supreme Court that the gold counted as a donation to the bride and that it was the bride’s personal wealth, pro-government Milliyet newspaper reported.

The unanimous decision came after an expert report was commissioned to look into the legal precedents of the case.
