Turkish government MPs in shock over Trump Jerusalem move

Some parliamentarians from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have said that U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was made under duress and does not represent the president’s true wishes.

“In the U.S., an internal coup has forced Trump to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,” Istanbul deputy Metin Külünk tweeted. “They are threatening him that if he did not do it they would remove him from power and try him with treason against his country and American ideals.”

“All international institutions must stop this time-bomb,” he said.

Former parliamentary constitution committee head Burhan Kuzu also said that Trump was under pressure.

“Oh Trump, oh dear! If only you had called me on the telephone before taking your decision about Jerusalem,” the Istanbul parliamentarian tweeted.

“I understand that they are squeezing you like a lemon and they are disrespecting you, but the way out must not be this ridiculous decision about Jerusalem.”
