Turkey extends Navtex for Yavuz drillship in East Med

Turkey has extended drilling operations for its drillship Yavuz located in the eastern Mediterranean until October 12, according to navigational advisory known as Navtex issued on Tuesday

The Yavuz will continue its drilling activities off the northwest of the divided island of Cyprus, according to the Navtex issued by the Antalya station under Turkish Navy’s Office of Navigation Hydrography and Oceanography.

The Yavuz was dispatched in December to conduct hydrocarbon exploration works off south of Cyprus, before being relocated.

The extended Navtex arrives amid soaring tensions between Turkey on the one side, and Cyprus and Greece on the other, on overlapping claims to hydrocarbon resources in the region. Both sides hold conflicting views of how far their continental shelves extend in waters.

Last month, Turkey dispatched the seismic survey vessel Oruç Reis to an area near the Greek island Crete, claimed by both sides, saying it would operate there until the end of the month. The move enraged Greece and prompted a military build-up in the waters.
