Almost half of Turkish graduates are out of work

Forty-three percent of Turkish university graduates under the age of 24 are out of work, columnist Allatin Aktaş wrote in the Dünya newspaper on Tuesday.

The proportion has risen from 38 percent last year and graduate unemployment has become endemic, Aktaş said, citing government data. Of 553,000 unemployed graduates, 379,000 are women, he said.

The government, while allowing university places to increase, is not helping graduates to find jobs, but instead focusing on low-skilled industries such as construction, Aktaş said.
