İmamoğlu, Demirtaş follow Erdoğan as most popular politicians in ruling AKP survey
The opposition mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, and the jailed former co-chair of the pro-Kurdish lawmaker, Selahattin Demirtaş, are the most popular politicians in Turkey following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, according to a survey by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Participants in the AKP survey answered the question “Who is your favourite politician?” with Erdoğan, İmamoğlu and Selahattin Demirtaş, respectively, an AKP official told Tarafsiz news agency on Tuesday.
The gap between Erdoğan and İmamoğlu is widening in favour of Erdoğan according to surveys, the official said.
The secularist main opposition Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) İmamoğlu became the mayor of Turkey’s largest city after defeating the AKP candidate Binali Yıldırm in a controversial revote in June.
The pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş is accused of terror links and has been behind bars since Nov. 2016.
AKP-ally Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli was the fourth most popular politician according to the survey, followed by centre-right nationalist Good (İYİ) Party leader Meral Akşener.
