Istanbul mayor İmamoğlu visits Christian religious leaders for Christmas

The opposition mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu visited on Wednesday the city’s Christian religious leaders to mark the occasion of Christmas.

The Republican People’s Party (CHP) mayor visited the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Dimitri Bartholomew, the Patriarchal Vicar of the Syriac Orthodox Church Metropolit Filiksinos Yusuf Çetin, the Apostolic Administrator of the Armenian Archeparchy of Istanbul Archbishop Levon Zekiyan and the leader of the Chaldean Catholic Church of Beyoğlu, news site Duvar said.

“Every individual of this city is a noble member of this town… As such, as equal individuals, as the equal 16 million people of this city, we should strive together for peace and tranquility,’’ İmamoğlu said.

CHP’s İmamoğlu, who was elected mayor of Turkey’s largest city in June, has been praised for his inclusive and conciliatory platform.

Istanbul is home to Turkey’s largest Christian population, including the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew, who is considered the spiritual head of Orthodox Christians worldwide.
