Turkey’s largest social media platform goes offline

Turkey’s largest social media platform, the dictionary-based discussion forum Ekşi Sözlük, has become impossible to access from Turkey as Sunday’s polls close, independent news site T24 said.

The site had slowed throughout the day due to heavy traffic, but it is still accessible from abroad or using a virtual private network (VPN), leading some to wonder at first if it had been banned.

It is possible that the site’s servers detected the huge surge in interest and decided that it was coming under attack from malicious sources in Turkey.

In any case, the site’s management put up a message apologising for the slow service and saying that the exceptional traffic might require some users to reload the homepage and start again.
