Son-in-law lauds Erdoğan with birthday video
Turkish Energy Minister Berat Albayrak lauded his father-in-law, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in a slick video posted on Twitter on Monday.
The video, showing Erdoğan in military uniform and scenes of Turkish heroism on the battlefield from Ottoman times to the present day, was accompanied by the message “To be born… a nation is on the path to discovering itself once again, it’s destiny…Happy birthday commander in chief”.
The video, full of nationalist symbols, also shows Erdoğan serving tea, kissing a young girl’s hand, arriving at a summit of world leaders and walking through Turkish flags at a political rally. The president turned 64 on Monday.
Erdoğan, whose party came to power in an election in 2002, became president in 2014, vowing to increase Turkey’s global influence and prosperity until the nation’s centenary in 2023 and beyond. He strengthened his presidential powers in a public referendum last year and rules the country by emergency decree after an attempted military coup in July 2016.
Erdoğan appointed Albayrak, married to his daughter Esra since 2004, as energy minister in November 2015. Albayrak, 40, is the former CEO of Çalik Holding, an energy and industrial group with close ties to Erdoğan’s government.
Some Turkish media and commentators have reported that Erdoğan is grooming Albayrak to become president.
