Brexit arrangement could be model for Turkey – German FM
Germany’s Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel sees a possible EU–UK “Brexit” deal as a potential model for economic relations with other states outside the EU, such as Turkey, German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle said.
"If we can reach a smart agreement with Great Britain that outlines its relations with Europe after Brexit, then that could serve as a model for other countries," it quoted Gabriel as saying.
Neither Turkey nor Ukraine were likely to join the EU soon, he said, so it "needs to consider alternative forms of closer cooperation" with the two countries, including a possible "new, closer form of customs union" with long-time EU candidate Turkey.
However, Gabriel also brought up the continued imprisonment of Turkish-German journalist Deniz Yücel in Turkey.
"The Turks know how important his fate is to us," he said.
