EU deeply worried about Turkish incursion into Syria
The European Union warned that Turkey’s military offensive in northern Syria could undermine a political solution for the conflict in the country.
“The Afrin offensive could have political consequences on the internal balances inside the future Syria at large and on the potential of political negotiations because the new escalation of violence could push away the chances for a political solution to the conflict, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said late on Tuesday.
Mogherini spoke during a debate on human rights in Turkey and the situation in the Syrian enclave of Afrin, which Turkey invaded late last month, according to Deutsche Welle.
“We are deeply worried about the new front opened in Syria,” she said. “We are worried first of all for humanitarian reasons. The people of Syria cannot afford a new front and a new crisis.”
Mogherini said Turkey is facing enormous challenges including a failed military coup, terrorism, a difficult refugee problem and the war in Syria.
