EU delegation to visit Ankara on visa-free travel issues
The European Commission is planning to send a delegation to Turkey in April to discuss visa-free travel for Turkish citizens within the European Union, Anadolu Agency said.
Visa liberalisation for Turkish citizens was a key component of the EU-Turkey refugee deal struck in 2016, which aimed to reduce the large number of refugees reaching Europe via the Greek islands near the Turkish mainland. In the same year, the European Commission prepared a road map for visa liberalisation, which included 72 requirements to be fulfilled by Turkey.
According to Anadolu Agency, Turkey still needs to fulfil seven outstanding criteria out of a total of 72 and the EU delegation coming to Turkey in April is expected to focus on Turkey's anti-terrorism legislation, the deal with the European Police Service (Europol), and regulations on the protection of personal data
