EU funding to Turkey to be diverted to democratisation – European Commission

Some of the European Union’s funding to Turkey will be diverted to democratisation initiatives, the president of the European Commission said.

There would be no funding cut, the Associated Press quoted commission President Jean-Claude Juncker as saying, but, he said, “we are reorienting them into the fields of judiciary, civil society, and things like that”.

With tensions between many EU countries and Turkey rising, the move appears to represent a compromise between Europe’s doves and hawks.

European Union leaders had called on the commission to propose a new strategy for the funds after a deterioration in human rights in the country.

"We want Turkey to re-become European," Juncker said.
