“There is an environment of trust between Turkey and the EU,” says anonymous EU official
A senior EU official, speaking to Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, drew a very optimistic picture of relations between Turkey and the EU.
According to this senior official, the presidential summit between Turkey and the EU to be held in Varna, Bulgaria on Mar. 26, will be a “very important step” in resolving issues between the EU and Turkey.
The official claims that an “environment of trust” exists between Turkey and the EU to discuss specific issues, and that visa-free travel to Europe for Turkish citizens might also be discussed during the summit.
“A privileged partnership model for Turkey in the EU is not the case but only an offer of full membership for Turkey,” says the same official.
The official also spoke about the role of Turkey in Astana peace talks for the resolution of the conflict in Syria. According to this senior official, “Turkey is representing the EU in a way in the Astana process”.
