Turkey’s fugitive cryptocurrency CEO spotted at Albanian hotel
The fugitive CEO of Turkish cryptocurrency platform Thodex has been spotted in Albania, state-run Anadolu agency reported on Thursday.
Faruk Fatih Özer is being sought by police after Thodex abruptly halted trading last month, leaving customers unable to access their funds.
Özer is believed to have fled to Albania, where local police arrested two people accused of sheltering him on April 27.
New security camera footage showed Özer checking into a hotel in the Albanian capital of Tirana, Anadolu said.
Trading volume via Thodex totalled $585.5 million on its most recent day of operations.
Thousands of people have filed criminal complaints with the Turkish courts saying they believe they have been scammed by the company. Özer has denied the charges.
A red Interpol notice remains in place for his arrest.
