Man’s body discovered as flash flooding hits Istanbul

Officials in Istanbul discovered the body of a man while clearing floodwaters following heavy downpours and flash flooding on Saturday, independent news site T24 reported.

The body was discovered in an underpass in the Unkapanı neighbourhood near the Golden Horn in Fatih district, T24 said, where floodwaters reached 190 centimetres in depth.

It remains unclear whether the man drowned during the flood or was unconscious or dead before and municipal crews continue to work in the area, it said.

The city’s major transport hubs such as Eminönü, Beşiktaş, Üsküdar, Karaköy, Kadıköy and Kabataş are among the lower parts and seafront areas of the city that have been affected by Saturday’s flash flooding.

A flash flooding, that led to the cancellation and suspension of numerous ferry and tram services in the city of 17 million, also affected the city’s historic Grand Bazaar.
