Turkey’s cultural heritage shot dead on Ankara street
A folk singer and poet who had been invited to represent Turkey at a UNESCO meeting in Paris was killed in a shooting incident in Ankara, Kurdish movement news agency Mesopotamia said.
Ayten Gülçınar was leaving the house with her friend Halil B. in her home neighbourhood of Eryaman when the latter’s son apparently began shooting at them, killing her and badly wounding him.
Gülçınar was a rare female aşık, a form of traditional Anatolian or Iranian minstrel who sings love poetry accompanied by a lute.
Her funeral is to be held today at Ankara Sincan Cemetery.
