Arsenal stars Özil and Kolasinac escape carjacking attempt

Two Arsenal footballers fended off a carjacking attempt by an armed gang in London on Thursday, the BBC reported.

German footballer Mesut Özil and Bosnian Sead Kolasinac were targeted by a group of carjackers wielding knives while driving in the north London borough of Golders Green.

Footage widely shared on social media shows Kolasinac outside the car fighting off two of the attackers.

"It was reported that suspects on motorbikes had attempted to rob a man who was driving a car,” the BBC quoted a Metropolitan Police spokesperson as saying.

"The driver, along with his passenger, managed to get away unharmed and travelled to a restaurant in Golders Green, where they were spoken to by officers."

The attack was widely reported in the Turkish press, which follows Özil, who has Turkish origins, closely.

Özil is highly regarded in Turkey, and his wedding ceremony in Istanbul this year featured President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as best man.
