Fenerbahçe poised to loan Arsenal’s Mesut Özil
Arsenal’s German-Turkish star Mesut Özil is set to join Istanbul giant Fenerbahçe on loan until the end of the season, British newspaper the Sun reported on Friday.
Fenerbahçe sporting director Damien Comolli travelled to London earlier this week to discuss a loan move in January, according to the Sun. A report in Turkish sports outlet Fotomaç said the deal was close to completion.
Arsenal last summer sought buyers for the player, whose contract is estimated at £350,000 per week, but was unable to find a club to meet his wage demands, the Sun said.
Özil became Arsenal’s record signing when he joined the London English Premier League club on transfer deadline day in September 2013 for an estimated £38 million.
But the German World Cup winner has faced criticism for inconsistent performances for the club in the years since, and was dropped this season by manager Unai Emery before the Spaniard was sacked last month.
Özil has also sparked a backlash from China after uploading a post condemning Beijing for its policy toward the Turkic speaking Uighur Muslims in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang, known by Uighurs as East Turkestan.
China’s state broadcaster CCTV pulled Arsenal matches from its schedule over Özil’s comments, and the Chinese distributor of Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 deleted the player from the video game.
