Turkish provincial governor orders school bells to play local football club anthem
School bells are to be replaced with the anthem of the local football club in one province of Turkey.
The governor of Kocaeli, east of Istanbul, sent out the written order to all state schools and institutions in the province on Thursday following a request from the chairman of local team Kocaelispor.
It comes as part of a longer-term initiative by club chairman Bahri Yavuz to get local children interested in the club.
In the past, he has distributed pencils and erasers featuring the team’s crest to schools.
Despite the sport being enormously popular in Turkey, 79.6 percent of Turks nationwide count themselves supporters of one of the big three Istanbul clubs – Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş – leaving local clubs facing an uphill battle for support.
