Greek vessel harasses Turkish corvette during sea-air exercise - AA
Footage from Turkish security sources shows a Greek assault vessel harassing a Turkish corvette during Turkey’s military exercise Sea Wolf (Denizkurdu) 2019, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Saturday.
Turkey's TCG Burgazada corvette was harassed by Kristalidis in international waters of the Aegean Sea, the agency said, noting the Greek boat manoeuvred too close to the Turkish vessel, risking safety.
The Turkish navy on Monday launched one of its largest naval exercises to date, in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black seas. Dubbed "Sea Wolf 2019" the exercise involves 131 warships, 57 warplanes and 33 helicopters and will run until May 25.
The Greek boat left after the Turkish crew gave warnings, Anadolu said.
Turkey and Greece are also at odds over the maritime borders in the Aegean, as Athens says it has the right to extend its territorial waters under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Turkey is not a part of the convention and sees any unilateral move by Greece as a cause of war.
Greece, for its part, says it has registered record numbers of territorial and airspace violations by Turkey in the Aegean over the past two years.
