Turkey should remember Ottoman defeats, says Greek minister
Turkey should not forget it was defeated by Greece in 1821, said Defence Minister Panos Kammenos.
Kammenos made his comments, reported by Greek daily Kathimerini, whilst speaking to journalists during a visit to an international arms exhibition in Armenian capital Yerevan on Thursday.
“We will continue to do our utmost to explain to Turkey that we want peace,” he said, "but we must remind it that in many moments of its history – and especially the moments he has in mind, of the great Ottoman Empire – it was defeated, like in Greece in 1821.”
He also expressed concern over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s belligerent language, including his references to reviving the Ottoman Empire, and to Turkey’s continued drift away from Europe and from international law.
Relations between Greece and Turkey are at a low ebb over a host of issues, ranging from the detention of two Greek soldiers by Turkish authorities at the start of the month, to the possession of uninhabited islets in the Aegean.
