Turkish and Greek jets tangle over Aegean Sea
A pair of Turkish F-16 jets entered Greek airspace on Thursday, before being engaged in a “mock dogfight” by the Greek air force, the Greek newspaper Kathimerini reports.
Turkish-Greek tension over the Aegean has been simmering since last December, when Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the head of the Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party, vowed to “take back” eighteen Greek islands in the sea.
The Turkish jets infringed on Greek airspace between the islands of Limnos and Lesvos, according to Kathimerini.
On Wednesday a Turkish coastguard vessel “scraped a Hellenic Navy gunboat near the islet of Imia”, the newspaper reported.
