Turkish Islamist party says Gül could represent them in 2019 elections
Turkey’s Islamist Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi) said it may nominate former President Abdullah Gül as its candidate in the 2019 presidential elections.
In response to a reporters’ question on whether Gül might run on the Felicity Party ticket, its leader Temel Karamollaoğlu was quoted by Birgün newspaper as saying:
Abdullah Gül is a valuable brother to us. Of course, there is a chance of him being a candidate. But it would not be right if we announced that right now.
There are two things to bear in mind here. Firstly, (Gül) himself must say, ‘I can make a bid’. And secondly, there should be a consensus that he can be elected president. If these conditions are met, he or others can be (our candidate).
Gül has publicly criticised President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, his former ally in the ruling Justice and Development Party, saying some decisions Erdoğan has made raise concern for the rule of law and democracy in Turkey.
His comments raised speculation in the Turkish media that he may run against Erdoğan.
