45 people held in northern Cyprus over Gülen links

A total of 45 Turkish nationals were held in Northern Cyprus over their links to Gülen movement, Anadolu Agency reported on Saturday.

The authorities dispatched security forces to the coastal city of Girne after receiving a tip that the group including 9 children and 17 women was preparing to escape to Greece, security sources told Anadolu Agency.

Turkish government accuses Gülen movement, a religious group, of masterminding the coup attempt in 2016. Over a hundred thousand of Gülen devotees have been jailed or dismissed from their jobs due to alleged links to the movement under a two-year state of emergency declared shortly after the coup attempt. Some members of the group seek refuge in other countries, particularly in Greece, in order to avoid prosecution and isolation.
