Suspected Gülenists, human smugglers detained in northwest Turkey

At least four suspected members of Gülen movement and three people smugglers were detained in the northwestern province of Edirne as they were attempting to cross to Greece on Sunday, Karar reported.

Turkish border guards detained the group in the border village of Doyran, which is among the most heavily used by people smugglers, Karar said.

Turkish government accuses Gülen movement, a religious group, of masterminding the coup attempt in 2016. Over a hundred thousand of Gülen devotees have been jailed or dismissed from their jobs due to alleged links to the movement under a two-year state of emergency declared shortly after the coup attempt.

Some members of the group seek refuge in other countries, particularly in Greece, in order to avoid prosecution and isolation.
